Hard Cover Book Structures
Are you ready to move beyond soft pamphlets or accordion books? This class will cover variations of hard-covered books with single and multiple sections. In class we will learn to make a pamphlet with board covers, a Sewn Board Binding, which opens flat, and lastly a case-bound book, similar to the books you may have at home. These structures are sewn and glued, covered in cloth and paper, and can be used as journals, sketchbooks, or artist books
In this course you will learn:
How to use the bookbinding tools.
Knowledge of bookmaking materials and their qualities.
Three (3) variations of hard cover books.
The skills to make more books for journals, sketchbooks, or artists’ books to your specifications.
Level of Experience / Skills Required
All levels; no prior book-making experience required. Some comfort with accurate measuring, folding, and cutting with blades/knives will be helpful to master the skills taught in this workshop.
You will need the following supplies:
Text weight paper – 65# to 80#
Cover weight paper – 65# to 80#
Decorated papers for covers and endsheets
Kits of curated materials are available for purchase. Materials will be from a variety of sources and cut to size. There will be enough to allow you to make each book.
TOOLS AND MATERIALS YOU WANT TO HAVE ON HAND FOR THE WORKSHOP:
Craft Knife / Olfa / Xacto
Self-healing cutting mat
Linen Thread – 18/3 thickness, unwaxed
Assembled tool kits for this class can be found at Colophon Book Arts, link here. You can purchase the basic kit at the link and add on any additional tools for this workshop. You can also purchase tools from any bookbinding supplier on the resource page or at your local art supply store.
