Multi-block Linocut Printmaking

Explore the multi-block method of linocut printmaking to create multi-colour prints on paper. Guest instructor Jacquie Sullivan will guide you through hands-on experimentation with carving techniques, application of ink, and printing on paper using a book press. Learn to plan for overlapping design elements to create new colours by using transparent extender. Over the two days you’ll carve several linocut blocks and use simple registration techniques to produce a small edition of colourful prints. 

In this course you’ll learn:

·         Basic tools & terminology related to linocut printmaking.
·         How to plan for a multi-block, multi-colour linocut print.
·         How to transfer your design to your key lino plate, and from your key plate to additional plates.
·         Simple registration techniques to align multiple layers of ink on finished prints.
·         How to edition a small suite of prints.

Level of Experience/Skills Required:

·         Open to all skill levels.
·         This workshop will be especially beneficial for those who already have some experience carving and printing one-colour linocut prints and want to develop their skills further.
·         All required tools & materials will be provided for use during the workshop, but those with their own carving tools are encouraged to bring them along.
·         Please dress for mess or bring an apron.
·         Bring a packed lunch/snacks & water bottle/drinks; a 45-minute lunch break will be taken mid-day.

BIO

Jacquie Sullivan grew up in Uxbridge, Ontario and studied Fine Art at the Universities of Windsor and Guelph. Since returning to a focused art practice in 2020, she creates hand-printed linocut, woodcut and letterpress prints, greeting cards and block-printed textiles out of her home studio in Whitby. She teaches introductory relief printmaking workshops in the Greater Toronto Area, and her work is represented by the Scugog Arts Space in Port Perry and Preston Gallery in Uxbridge.
